NightGuards
About Night Guards
MINT dentistry is popularly known for our cosmetic treatments, but we also want to protect your smile from damage. Grinding your teeth and clenching your jaw (medically known as bruxism) when you sleep is a common issue that causes damage to your teeth, gums, and jaw. While the most visible sign of damage is wear or damage to the surface of the teeth, bruxism can lead to headaches, tooth pain, swelling in the lower face, plus neck and jaw pain. MINT dentistry's team of board-certified dentists recommends night guards that are custom made to protect your mouth while you sleep. Our night guards are made with high-quality materials utilizing state-of-the-art technology for a comfortable fit that also prevents damage from grinding your teeth and clenching your jaw, helping you to achieve a restful night of sleep. Best Candidates
It's important to look for signs that you have nocturnal bruxism (grinding your teeth and clenching your jaw while you sleep). A night guard may help if you frequently have headaches upon waking as well as pain, tightness, or swelling in your jaw. Other signs that may be alleviated with a night guard include loose teeth or fillings, worn-down enamel on the tops of your back teeth, tooth sensitivity, and a receding gumline. Clenching your jaw and grinding your teeth at night are usually stress related, but it may also be the result of a sleep disorder, allergies, misaligned teeth, or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). When your dental team is diagnosing bruxism, we also look for the underlying cause so we can create your best treatment plan.
What to Expect
To diagnose bruxism and determine if you would benefit from a night guard, we will perform a thorough oral health exam. You can relax in one of our treatment chairs wearing MINT sunglasses and listening to your favorite music through Beats headphones while the exam is performed. After we diagnose you with nocturnal bruxism, we will take impressions and digital x-rays of your teeth to help us design your custom night guard. MINT dentistry will send this information to a dental laboratory where your guard will be crafted out of high-quality materials with advanced technology. When your guard is sent back to our office, you will be scheduled for a fitting. We may make a few adjustments to your guard to give you a more comfortable fit. Your team will also give you instructions on how to care for your guard, so it remains in great condition for many years.
Treatment Aftercare
To get optimal results from your night guard, you should wear it every night or as often as recommended. Your guard should minimize or eliminate any problems caused by nocturnal bruxism; however, if it does not, contact our office right away. For a healthy mouth and night guard, you should clean your teeth and guard both before and after you use it. Please bring your night guard to every appointment at MINT dentistry so we can make adjustments or repairs if they are needed.
The MINT Commitment
If you have been diagnosed with nocturnal bruxism or jaw clenching, part of the cost of your night guard will possibly be covered by insurance. We will contact your provider to verify the coverage of your specific policy. During your consultation, we will be able to estimate your costs. To help make your treatment more affordable, we accept numerous forms of payment and we can help you find medical financing. MINT dentistry is committed to helping patients of all ages and stages of life achieve great oral health. If you do not have PPO dental insurance, get more information on the MINT Discount Plan.
